Good Practice Guidance for the Establishment of Practice Learning Opportunities This Guidance was drafted in the summer of 2006 after a year of consultation. It had become apparent to NOPT’s national committee that there were considerable variations across England in the way practice learning was being established, with little or no agreement about quality assurance. In order to obtain an overview more systematically, and one which was not reliant on anecdotal evidence, it was proposed that a series of workshops should be held in the regions. These workshops would use a common template to enable information to be collated in a meaningful way. Skills for Care funding was applied for and obtained through the Practice Learning Taskforce and the Learning Resource Network. This supported members of NOPT’s committee to find venues for the workshops, which they then facilitated. The information obtained confirmed that there was indeed huge variation. Using the collated information, the Guide was drafted, making proposals that were pertinent to all regions. Consultation around the Guide took place at the NOPT Workshop in Manchester in September 2006. Amendments were made and what is now presented on the web page is the version as modified by members. No decision has yet been made as to whether the Guide will be published in hard copy. It is likely that any decision about this will only be made when the implications of the recently circulated GSCC document “Guidance on Enabling Others” are fully understood. It is hoped that by having reference to the Guide, albeit still in draft, that members will have the opportunity to explore and consider what needs to be taken into account when initiating practice learning in whatever setting.
